Norovirus, also called Norwalk virus, Norwalk viruses or just NV, is a winter vomiting virus which can be very difficult to prevent from spreading. The main symptoms of infection in humans are nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Every year from December to March is a high-alert stage for Norovirus infection and children are considered a highly susceptible population for infection. Staff at CIEO Calgary kindergarten held an emergency meeting and formulated the following Norovirus prevention and control measures:
1. As soon as life teachers arrive in class they will disinfect the desks, chairs, ground, doors and windows and then repeat this cleaning procedure at noon and in the evening.
2. Toys and bedding should be daily disinfected and insolated.
3. Teachers must observe each child; reporting to the doctor immediately any and all cases of diarrhea or vomiting. Regarding children absent due to illness, teachers will perform follow-up over the phone.
4. Children are reminded to wash their hands, drink more water, and not eat uncooked or cold foods.
5. Disinfection of children's supplies such as towels, tableware, cups etc are to be regular and subject to strict record keeping.
6. Children¡¯s meal times are to be strictly controlled to ensure that food in kitchen is fully cooked and remains properly heated and that tableware is strictly disinfected.
Using CIEO Calgary¡¯s protocol above, all CIEO kindergartens are now well prepared to control outbreaks of Norovirus.
