Happy

Interview Transcripts for Vancouver Camp

Jenny
K:Hi Jenny, have you been to other countries before?
J:I have been to Japan.
K:What do you think of Canada?
J:The people there are very polite and more relaxed than us, and the environment is very good.
K:Were you accustomed to living in your host family?
J:Yes, I felt good in the host family. My host dad and mom love movies. Every day we would get together to watch movies. I watched the movie Harry Potter again with their kids. Although I had watched it a few times before, I enjoy the movie times with them. And what moved me most is that my home dad and mom registered a WeChat account specially to chat with me.
K: Did you do anything special on the “Host Family Day”?
J:We went to their grandparents’ home for a big family dinner. Grandparents’ house is very big, it is a three-storey villa. And there is a lake beside the backyard. We sailed on the lake and had a great time.
K:So, it was a happy Host Family Day?
J:I think my home dad and mom respect our privacy very much. They would knock on the door before they came in our room.

New Experiences
Many kids love the homestay aspect of Canadian camp. They are allowed the chance to actually live with a Canadian family for a week, learning their house rules, eating their daily meals with them, and celebrating a “host family day” on the weekend.  Jenny had the awesome chance to actually go out onto the lake on the family’s boat, and then head back into their grandparent’s villa to hang out for the rest of the day.  She had a lot of cool photos she sent out to our student WeChat, and some great memories to take home with her.

Hugo
K:You had a lot of classes during this camp. What was your favorite class?
H:I liked archery and fishing class.
K:You shoot quite well in the archery class, right?
H:Not bad. Yet I found it difficult to grasp the angle of the bow.
K:I thought you had been doing pretty well.
H:Actually my scores ranked second in the archery class, just one point behind the highest scores.
K:How about fishing class?
H:There are many fish in the lake so that we could catch fish very easily. We have a sense of accomplishment.
K:Did you lose anything during this camp? And how did you pack your luggage?
H:No, I lost nothing, I kept my own things very well. I like packing things, it’s a piece of cake for me to pack my suitcase.

Tenacity
Hugo always found ways to participate in every activity we took part in, and often times ranked highly when doing so.  Canadian’s value tenacity, and Hugo truly had a fighter’s spirit throughout the camp, to the point where he showed only excitement and preparedness with regards to travelling abroad with his classmates, even though he had never been outside of the country before.  Hugo’s a strong kid, and his tenacious spirit is a strong reflection of the Canadian value system.

Jack
K:Hi Jack, have you been to other countries before?
J:I have been to America, Japan and Germany.
K: What do you think of Canada?
J:The air is very clean and the environment is very good. The people are also very nice.
K:And what do you think of your host family? Were you accustomed to their living style?
J:Our host family has a very big house with a big backyard. They plant some fruit trees in the backyard, and there is also a gas-heated swimming pool. Our host dad and mom would go to swim before dinner.
K: Did you join them in swimming?
J:Yes, I swam with them a few times.
K:You had many courses, such as an ESL class, crime scene analysis class, an archery class, a fishing class, etc. What was your favorite class?
J:Archery and cycling class. Although I didn’t shoot well in the archery class, but I just loved it. We had two days for cycling. The first day we rode on flat ground, the second day was in the mountains. I chose a small bike and I rode very fast on the first day, very smoothly, but was not very good when we rode in the mountains.

Open-Minded
Jack’s teachers and home stay family were happy about how open he was to trying new things.  Even if he had never done something before, he showed no hesitation in joining in an activity, or in trying a new meal, and preferred just to jump right into things. This type of open-mindedness is often found around travelers and people with an international mindset.  Watching Jack at work and at play, you could tell that he was really ready for whatever new or dynamic thing came his way.

Teddy
K:Hi Teddy, have you been to other countries?
T:No.
K:So this was your first time to go abroad. How did you feel? And what do you think of Canada?
T:The air and streets there are very clean. But I suffered from jet-lag in the first two days. I felt dizzy then.
K:Did you get used to the living in your host family?
T:My host family has two sons, one is just two years old, the other is four. And they have a big house with a big backyard. We could play on a trampoline and swings there. They have no pets.  My partner and I lived in the basement but it is different from our basements in China. Their basement is just a room full of light - very comfortable.
K: Oh really?
T:And they have a private cinema in the basement.
We had a special WeChat group for our students, where students were encourage to send in selfies daily.  The winner of each day’s selfie contest wouldn’t have to do the homework for the next day.  Teddy was a pro at taking daily life pictures with his family, whether they were swimming, watching a movie, or just playing outside that day.
Happy
K:Hi Happy, have you been to other countries before?
H:I have been to Russia, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and I also went to CIEO’s Winter Camp 2017 in Canada.
K:What do you think of our last Winter Camp?
H:I loved it, I enjoyed the skiing, so I will go to your Winter Camp next time.
K:Since you have been to Canada twice, what do you think of it?
H:The air is very clean and the environment is very good.
K:What do you think of your host family?
H:My host dad and mom are old, just like my grandparents. My hast dad is an Indian, my host mom is local.
K:How about their food? Do you like their eating?
H:My host dad is good at making many delicious foods, such as fried rice, soup and other Indian food. I loved all their food.
K:Wow, sounds very delicious.
H:Yes, and home mom sometimes made pizza for us.

Responsibility
This was Happy’s second camp with us.  As a camp leader, he was extremely helpful, guiding new students on where to go and how to act, and also reliable in that he knew our camp rules and was a good example to everyone else.  I’m looking forward to going skiing with him this next Winter Camp!
Cora
K:  What classes did you have during this camp?
C:Berry picking, baking cookies, cycling and fishing.
K:Which class did you like most? Why?
C:I like the cooking and fishing, because it was my first time to bake cookies so I felt it is something new for me. There were many fish in the lake so we could easily catch fish.
K:I see, so what impressed you most in this summer camp?
C:I like the programs in Canada, which are quite different from ours in China. In China, every day we have to do a lot of homework and our teachers just want us to cram. We lack critical thinking.
K:Yes, you are right.
C:Yet in Canada, the teachers may just sit in front of the class, and encourage the students to ask questions and they interact a lot. I like this way of learning.
K:Yes, they encourage Inquiry-Based Learning. So, do you feel any personal changes after camp?
C:Yes, I have great initiative in expressing my own ideas now. For last winter camp, I didn’t dare to talk to my host family. This time I could communicate with my host dad and mom fluently.
Humility
Many students are afraid to speak out in their classrooms, fearing that they might give an incorrect answer.  However, in class, Cora took to the Canadian style of education very quickly, asking questions when she didn’t understand something, and trying to mirror her teacher’s example as closely as possible.  In Canadian education, admitting that you don’t know something isn’t considered a bad thing.  Instead, it allows the teachers to work better with a class to better understand a process.
Kiki
K:Which class did you like most? Why?
Kiki: I liked archery and fishing. Because I think archery helps exercise my arms and eyes. There were many fish in the lake so we could even catch fish without earthworms.
K:Wow, cool.
Kiki:We saw some rabbits in UBC and they were not afraid of people. So cute! We fed them.
K:So, what is your greatest memory of this summer camp?
Kiki:I feel myself to be more independent, and I’m more aware of team work.
K:Did you lose anything during this camp? Do you know how to pack your luggage?
Kiki: No, I am good at packing things so I separated the clean clothes and dirty clothes in my suitcase.
K: Did you buy any gifts for your parents?
Kiki:I bought maple syrup and berry jam, but my parents think the maple syrup is too sweet.

Kiki has a real strong character.  She was never afraid to try anything new, and she thought everything had the potential to be fun.  This went really far for her while we were abroad, as she wasn’t afraid to speak English, make new friends, or try new activities out.  She was another student that modeled the Canadian virtue of being “Tenacious”.
