“Hello, What’s your name?”
Rewarding Games for New English Learners
Canadian International Kid's English – Taojin (CTC-TJ)
Children in Canadian International Kid's English – Taojin (CTC-TJ) Students enter the classroom with their English names written on name tags on their clothes, and sit down in their chairs, ready to go.
“Hello, what's your name?” These are the first words from our foreign teacher as they warmly greet the new children. Our foreign teachers use large actions, accompanied with some instructions and games, to guide the children to answer questions. In this process, the foreign teachers can give the children rewards – special Canadian School money. Canadian School money can be used for gifts and toys.
While we play our English games, children repeatedly practice words and sentences, to create a fun learning atmosphere in the classroom. In on game, children walk around the room, performing an action. when the foreign teacher calls out "stop ", the children would freeze during the action, waiting for the next instruction to come. However, during this “frozen” time, the foreign teacher tries to make them laugh, and this causes a lot of hilarity throughout the class. Our students love this kind of game, and can quickly learn the English and instructions that the game is based around.
Many children react differently to their first day in class. Some will cry, and don’t want to enter the classroom. Some are a bit confused by the new environment. However, as they continue to attend classes, they will begin to get used to our classroom, and look forward to attending. Adapting to the new environment, new students become self - confident, daring to speak English loudly. Some children will even help the teacher begin to set-up the classroom.
A relaxed atmosphere allows for students to feel less pressure in learning a whole new language.
